Safe Routes to School Committee

Mission Statement

The Vienna Elementary School (VES) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Committee was formed to sponsor walking and biking events at VES, to help secure state SRTS program funding for sidewalks in the VES walking region, and to be an advocate for our children at the town level for completing sidewalks and other pedestrian safety issues.

Walking Wednesdays

Every Wednesday is “Walking Wednesday” at Vienna Elementary and children who walk to school are given a toe token or sometimes a special reflective safety charm for participating. The children collect these on chains on their backpacks. We set up a token table on the blacktop where children pick up their tokens and coffee is provided by Caffe Amouri for parents that walk in. The program has been run rain or shine year round since it was started on International Walk to School Day in October of 2011.

What Can You Do To Help Promote Safe Routes To School?

Become involved. You can volunteer for the SRTS Committee as a regular member or as a neighborhood captain to champion a missing sidewalk on your route to school or near your house. Join the W&OD Trail Patrol and help keep the trail safe for our many children that walk or ride to school using the W&OD trail. Contact the Mayor and members of Town Council and let them know that sidewalks are important to you. Let them know if you are in favor of a funded plan to complete the town’s sidewalk system and if you disagree with allowing adjacent neighbors to veto sidewalk construction. Attend Town Council meetings when sidewalk votes come up in your neighborhood and voice your support.
