Fall 2012 After School Classes

VES PTA announces the fall line up of After School Classes

Thank you for your interest. Fall registration is now complete. Watch this page later in the school year for our next session offerings.

Please be aware of the following policies:

  • Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
  • Registrations will only be taken through the online registration page and payment made using PayPal (no account necessary to use MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover).
  • If a class has not reached the minimum number of students by September 21, it will be canceled and money refunded.
  • Classes are priced at cost plus an administrative service fee.  The PTA does not try to make a profit off of these classes.
  • Classes will follow FCPS policy on cancellations due to weather.  In the event classes are canceled due to weather, we will make every effort to add the missed days to the end of the schedule—space and instructors permitting.
  • Parents must pickup students immediately at the end of class.  SACC students will be taken there.  Walkers and children who attend Tiny Tots must be picked up in the lobby by a designated adult at the end of class.  For safety reasons, these children cannot be released to walk home or to Tiny Tots on their own.
  • In the event of consistent late pickups or behavior problems, the student will be dismissed from the class without refund.
  • Refunds will be given up to and including the first week of the class. As of the second week of class no refunds will be given.  The administrative fee will be deducted from the refund.

Classes offered this Fall

Chess Club (all grades)–$118 for 10 weeks

Tournament Training (optional add on)–$266 for 10 weeks (Chess Club and Training)

The PTA is offering a chess club through Silver Knights Chess (https://www.silverknightschess.com).  This is a fun way to learn how to play chess or to sharpen your skills. We will offer both a beginner class as well as an intermediate/advanced class depending on interest.  Silver Knights chess will assess skill level on the first meeting date. Students will also have the opportunity to compete in tournaments against players from other schools if they wish. This class is open to all students in grades K‐6 regardless of skill level.

New this year: Students in the Vienna Elementary School Chess Club now have the option of joining Tournament Training as well. Tournament is meant for children that are more serious about the game and wish to improve. Students use chess clocks and score sheets every week, and the focus is on playing slower games and analyzing students’ games to learn from mistakes. Students will play tournament games in the class, and will need to join the US Chess Foundation, which costs $17/year.
