Odyssey of the Mind is back at Vienna Elementary!
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program for children, K-12 and teaches skills to last a lifetime:
- creativity
- problem solving
- spontaneous thinking
- teamwork, collaboration, competitive skills
- performance skills: plot, continuity, scenery, costume, music
- mechanical engineering and construction
- strategizing within explicit boundaries
- sportsmanship and cooperation
Teams of 5-7 students, guided by an adult coach, work on one of 6 problems. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities which range from building mechanical devices to presenting interpretations of literary classics. Teams of students meet after school for several months to develop solutions to one of five Long Term Problems, while practicing for a Spontaneous Problem. In other words, the kids do all the work so, the coaches don't have to be the creative ones! Parents can be, and are, coaches.
Teams are forming now! If you are interested in being a coach, your assistance is greatly needed. You can help form a team; without coaches we will have no teams! Children of parent coaches are guaranteed a spot on a team. For more information please contact

2011-2012 VES-PTA REFLECTIONS PROGRAM . . . "Diversity Means. . . "
Do you express your creativity through dance, music, story or poetry?
Do you enjoy drawing, taking photographs or videotaping your friends?
Then the VES-PTA and your Teachers encourage you to participate in the Reflections Art Program!
The PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance a quality arts education by providing a venue for students to create and be recognized positively for original works of art based on a common theme. This year's theme is "Diversity means..."
Students in preschool through grade 12 can participate in the arts areas of literature, dance choreography, film production, musical composition, photography, and visual arts.
Age divisions are preschool through grade 2, grades 3-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12.
To enter, download the Entry form, Basic Rules, Consent form (and instructions), and the Specific rules for your art form choice (see below). PLEASE…READ ALL RULES CAREFULLY!! Create your original art piece which reflects and embraces this year’s theme “Diversity means…” using one of the six areas listed below.
Literature Rules
Dance Choreography Rules
Musical Composition Rules
Visual Arts Rules
Photography Rules
Film Production Rules
As always, parent support is very important. However, parents must remember that student artists need to be responsible for their own work. Children must make their own decisions about what to create and what to enter. Encourage your child to simply do their best; crooked lines, incorrect musical notes, or misspelled words do not disqualify anyone.
All VES participants will be recognized and awarded for their works. An exclusive exhibit in the school and a special celebration will be held, just for the Reflections participants! The first place winners of each area/age group will move on to be judged at the next level of the competition. So put on your dancing shoes, grab a camera, pen or paintbrush and start creating your very own masterpiece!!
