After School Programs- Spring

Registration for all after school classes begins on January 5th and closes January 13th.  The only method for registration is www.pay4schoolstuff.com.

The fine print:
• Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
• If a class has not reached the minimum number of students by the end of registration, it will be canceled and money refunded.
• Classes are priced at cost plus an administrative service fee. The PTA is not planning to make a profit off of these classes.
• Classes will follow FCPS policy on cancellations due to weather. In the event classes are canceled due to weather, we will make every effort to add the missed days to the end of the schedule—space and instructors permitting.
• Parents must pickup students immediately at the end of class. SACC students will be taken there. Walkers and children who attend Tiny Tots must be picked up in the lobby by a designated adult at the end of class. For safety reasons, these children cannot be released to walk home or to Tiny Tots on their own.
• In the event of consistent late pickups, or behavior problems the student will be dismissed from the class without refund.
*Refunds will be given up to and including the first week of the class. As of the second week of class no refunds will be given*

Chess Club - $126 for 12 weeks

The PTA is offering a chess club through Silver Knights Chess.  This is a fun way to learn how to play chess or to sharpen your skills. We will offer both a beginner class as well as an intermediate/advanced class depending on interest. Silver Knights chess will assess skill level on the first meeting date. Students will also have the opportunity to compete in tournaments against players from other schools if they wish. This class is open to all students in grades K‐6 regardless of skill level. If you have any questions please contact Angela McCall.

Mad Science - $113 for 8 weeks - **Class has reached maximum enrollment**

Mad Science is a fun, experiment-based class that focuses on hands–on imaginative learning. This spring, we will explore the universe in Guide to the Galaxy. Drama Club - $85 for 8 weeks

Drama Club will be taught by Acting For Young People and is open to all grades and skill levels.  There will be two classes divided by age. Students learn to use their own unique qualities to act; using theater games, improvisation, story telling, and text. Through individual and group activities, young actors build confidence and each will make a significant contribution to our final presentation, held on the last class day.  If you have any questions please contact Monica Cramer.

Spanish 1-3 and 4-6 --$200 for 20 sessions, 2 sessions a week - NOTE: Unfortunately the class has been cancelled for the Spring

These classes are a continuation of the fall Spanish classes. Our instructors are native speakers and are experienced teaching these languages to elementary school aged children. Odyssey of the Mind is back at Vienna Elementary!

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program for children, K-12 and teaches skills to last a lifetime:
  • creativity
  • problem solving
  • spontaneous thinking
  • teamwork, collaboration, competitive skills
  • performance skills: plot, continuity, scenery, costume, music
  • mechanical engineering and construction
  • strategizing within explicit boundaries
  • sportsmanship and cooperation
Teams of 5-7 students, guided by an adult coach, work on one of 6 problems. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities which range from building mechanical devices to presenting interpretations of literary classics. Teams of students meet after school for several months to develop solutions to one of five Long Term Problems, while practicing for a Spontaneous Problem. In other words, the kids do all the work so, the coaches don't have to be the creative ones! Parents can be, and are, coaches.

Teams are forming now!  If you are interested in being a coach, your assistance is greatly needed.  You can help form a team; without coaches we will have no teams!  Children of parent coaches are guaranteed a spot on a team.  For more information please contact Sonal Doran.

2011-2012 VES-PTA REFLECTIONS PROGRAM . . . "Diversity Means. . . "

Do you express your creativity through dance, music, story or poetry?
Do you enjoy drawing, taking photographs or videotaping your friends?
Then the VES-PTA and your Teachers encourage you to participate in the Reflections Art Program!

The PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance a quality arts education by providing a venue for students to create and be recognized positively for original works of art based on a common theme. This year's theme is "Diversity means..."
Students in preschool through grade 12 can participate in the arts areas of literature, dance choreography, film production, musical composition, photography, and visual arts.
Age divisions are preschool through grade 2, grades 3-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12.

To enter, download the Entry form, Basic RulesConsent form (and instructions), and the Specific rules for your art form choice (see below). PLEASE…READ ALL RULES CAREFULLY!! Create your original art piece which reflects and embraces this year’s theme “Diversity means…” using one of the six areas listed below.

Literature Rules

Dance Choreography Rules

Musical Composition Rules

Visual Arts Rules

Photography Rules

Film Production Rules

As always, parent support is very important. However, parents must remember that student artists need to be responsible for their own work. Children must make their own decisions about what to create and what to enter. Encourage your child to simply do their best; crooked lines, incorrect musical notes, or misspelled words do not disqualify anyone.

All VES participants will be recognized and awarded for their works. An exclusive exhibit in the school and a special celebration will be held, just for the Reflections participants! The first place winners of each area/age group will move on to be judged at the next level of the competition. So put on your dancing shoes, grab a camera, pen or paintbrush and start creating your very own masterpiece!!
